Hogwarts Legacy is primarily an RPG, but it contains several MMO elements and features that you would not expect to see in a traditional open-world game. For example, you can breed creatures such as beasts or animals, just as in farming or even a Pokemon game. How to unlock breeding, which creatures can be bred, and why – find answers to all those burning questions in our Hogwarts Legacy guide below.
How to Breed Creatures in Hogwarts Legacy
Basically, in Hogwarts Legacy, you can capture and tame Beasts. In the Room of Requirement as you unlock The Vivarium, where the animals you catch will be showcased, and later during the campaign, you even get the opportunity to breed them.
To kick-start all this business, you first need to complete the “Plight of a House Elf” and the “Charles Rookwood’s Trial” side-quests. When you finish them, you get the next one – “The Foal of the Dead” from Deek The House Elf (located in the Room of Requirement). This quest is essentially a tutorial for creature capture and breeding, as it will require you to capture the male and female versions of the Thestral as well as purchase and learn the Breeding Pen Spellcraft.

To get the Breeding Pen Spellcraft, the ability to conjure a Breeding Pen, you just need to go and buy it at “Tomes and Scrolls” in Hogsmeade. As for Thestral, you will need some Pokeballs – just kidding, go find them at their habitat in the upper right corner of the map, just look for the purple paw icon on the map – find them there and use Nab-Sack for capture.
When you have a male and female version of Thestral (or any other beast) in the Breeding Pen, just interact with the book in front to initiate the breeding process! And just like growing plants in Hogwarts Legacy, it will take some real-world time, so come back in 30 minutes and you will get the offspring.
How to Capture Creatures in Hogwarts Legacy
In order to capture creatures in Hogwarts Legacy, you need to first complete Main Quest #28 “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom“, this is a quest you cannot miss and unlocks the ability to capture beasts – and complete Deek’s questline with filling the Vivarium and breeding animals.
To capture beasts, you basically need to sneak up on them and use the Nab-Sack to initiate the mini-game that, if done correctly, will get them in your inventory. Also, you can be creative here with your tactics, using skills and magic that you have at your disposal, for example, become invisible with Disillusionment or use Levioso on the animal you’re trying to capture – go wild!
All Creatures You Can Breed in Hogwarts Legacy
So, in order to unlock the “The Nature of the Beast” achievement/trophy, you need to breed all of the 12 kinds of beasts in the game. Okay, there are actually 13, but you can’t breed Phoenix – all other creatures from the list below you can:
- Graphorn
- Diricawl
- Thestral
- Kneazle
- Mooncalf
- Fwooper
- Niffler
- Jobberknoll
- Giant Purple Toad
- Unicorn
- Hippogriff
- Puffskein
Why Breed Creatures in Hogwarts Legacy?
Well, aside from the achievement, you will do it just for the money of course! The offspring you get from the breeding can be sold to Beasts Shop “Brood and Peck” in Hogsmeade for 120 cash each! So, when you unlock all four zones of the Vivarium and set up a bunch of Breeding Pens that work constantly, and which you update every 30 minutes, you can farm some serious cash. You thought you were going to name them, make them your pets, and train them to fight? Nah, you’re just a cattle farmer in a wizard robe. Have fun!
