Sanctuary is a grim place, full of beaten down people and monsters that really, really want you dead. But if there’s one silver lining, it’s that chests are scattered across the land. Frequently, these chests will shower you with a health potion, maybe a piece of equipment, or a few handfuls of gold. But Silent Chests are in another class altogether. Here’s how to open Silent Chests in Diablo IV.
How to Open Silent Chests in Diablo IV
Most of the chests you’ll across in Diablo IV blend into the brown-and-grey scenery of Sanctuary. But there’s one type of chest you simply can’t miss: the Silent Chest. Not only are these chests cartoonishly large and colorful, but they’re also covered in chains.
Unfortunately, they won’t open unless you have the key. But getting a key for the Silent Chest is straightforward.
Head to your local Purveyor of Curiosities. One can be found in the village of Yelesna and in the city of Kyovashad, and they’re noted on the map with an icon of a money bag with a question mark on it.
Once you find a Purveyor of Curiosities, scroll down their wares until you find the Whispering Key. The Whispering Key costs 20 Obols. If you don’t have enough Murmuring Obols, keep an eye out for random world events. These events are denoted on your map with a golden ring. All you need to do is step inside and complete the task.

Always try to go for the mastery competition if possible, because it means better rewards. And because Murmuring Obols aren’t a guarantee, this is the best way to ensure they drop.
Once you have your Whispering Key, return to the Silent Chest and unlock it. You should get 3-4 equipment items of varying degrees of rarity and plenty of gold.
You can opt to carry as many Whispering Keys as you like, but note that inventory space is limited. If you’re curious as to whether or not you can increase your inventory, check out Can you Increase Inventory Space in Diablo 4? – Answered.
