In World of Warcraft Dragonflight patch 10.1, Blizzard introduced a brand-new item upgrade system that is somehow far more complicated than the old one! The objective with this new system was to create brackets of gear which can only be upgraded to a certain level – no more spamming +2 keystones and upgrading gear to maximum ilvl, unfortunately.
The upgrade materials (various Shadowflame Crests) for each of these brackets – Explorer, Adventurer, Hero, and Champion, can be acquired from their respective activities like Mythic dungeons, Raiding, etc. (basically, where you first got the gear). But there’s another way to get Shadowflame Crests – by trading Unearthed Fragrant Coins in Loam.
How to Get Unearthed Fragrant Coins in WoW Dragonflight
Unearthed Fragrant Coins in Dragonflight can be found in Zaralek Cavern by completing bonus activities signified by a yellow horn on the map. These activities reward one of two items that contain them: Clinking Dirt-Covered Pouch (3-5 coins) and Clanging Dirt-Covered Pouch (6-9 coins).
My best advice for getting as many coins as possible is to simply fly around the cavern and keep an eye on your map. There are occasionally chat alerts cluing you in to new events, so pay some mind to the chat as well.

Unearthed Fragrant Coins are not only spent on chests containing Shadowflame Crest Fragments, but on cosmetics as well. By exchanging them for Coveted Baubles, you can purchase a couple mounts and a pet in Loam as well by visiting Saccratros. It’s up to you whether you’re focused on gear upgrades or cosmetics, but as I always say, “Gear is temporary, mounts are forever.”
You’ll be tripping over new currencies and bits and bobs as you explore Zaralek Caverns, but everything has its use. Just be sure not to let your bags get overstuffed in the meantime – you probably won’t need those old Wrath of the Lich King reagents anymore.
