Do you love Munchlax? Like a lot? Would you be willing to do anything for it? Even if that anything means grinding through one of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s hardest minigames? Then do we have good news for you. Here’s how to get Shiny Munchlax in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s The Teal Mask DLC.
How to Get Shiny Munchlax in Pokemon The Teal Mask
If you have Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC, then a whole host of new Pokemon are available to you. Among those are Munchlax and Snorlax. And while at least one Snorlax can be easily found and captured, there is a way to get a Shiny Munchlax for free.
But you’re really going to have to earn it.
To get Shiny Munchlax in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you’ll need to beat Ogre Oustin’ on Hard Mode. And it’s just that: Hard. It has 10 rounds you must win.
How to Find Ogre Oustin’ in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Ogre Oustin’ is a minigame in the Kitakami region as a part of The Teal Mask DLC, and becomes accessible once you unlock the festival. You’ll need to interact with two folklore signs and then return home with Keiran to unlock this part of the game.
Once you do, the Ogre Oustin’ minigame will be available at Kitakami Hall permanently, and a fast travel point will open up that will allow you to fly directly to it at any time. To play Ogre Oustin’, speak to the masked woman in the long red booth at the top of both flights of stairs. You’ll then have the option to play solo or with others. To unlock Hard Mode, you must beat all the Easy and Normal difficulty stages; there are three on Easy and six in Normal.
How to Beat Ogre Oustin’ in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
To beat Ogre Oustin’, you’ll need to drive into colored balloons. Each balloon you hit will get you one colored Berry. Each round, you’ll be required to get a certain number of points in each color, then bring them back to the tables in the center of the arena.
For example, if the round requires you to get four red Berries, you’ll need to hit four red balloons and drive back to the table to turn them in. But note, once you turn in a point, Skwovet, Greedent, Munchlax, and Snorlax will appear to try and eat them. To get rid of these squirrel Pokemon, you must “roar” around them by pressing the “R” button.
If you join someone’s Hard match before you unlock it yourself, you won’t unlock Shiny Munchlax.
We highly recommend you play with a coordinated team to beat all three rounds of Hard, as Ogre Oustin’ becomes a real challenge at this difficulty. You can also check out our Ogre Oustin’ guide for some tips and tricks to get you through the game’s toughest challenge.
Ogre Oustin’ Shiny Munchlax Stats and Mark
Once you defeat all 10 rounds of Ogre Oustin’s Hard Mode, you’ll get your standard Mochis, and you’ll get a Shiny Munchlax with the Crafty Mark. The Crafty Mark will give Munchlax the “The Opportunist” title. It’s also a Mark that has a 1 in 100 chance of being found on rare Pokemon.
The Munchlax you’ll receive is level 1 with an Impish Nature, and Tackle and Lick unlocked.
How to Get a Shiny Munchlax in the Wild
Beating all 10 rounds of Ogre Oustin’ on Hard might not be everyone’s cup of tea. You may not want to go through that nightmare. We get it. The good news is, you can get still get a shiny Munchlax in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. The bad news is, you’ll have to do it the old school way: shiny hunting. And shiny hunting can be an extremely time consuming process.
At its very base without any fluff, the rate of finding a shiny Pokemon in the wild is 1/4086. This means that if you’re playing the game naturally, you have a good chance of running into a shiny Munchlax around once out of every 4,086 Munchlax encounters. Your eyes may be popping out of your head right now, but don’t worry too much because we can up those odds.
The following conditions will increase your rate of finding a shiny Munchlax:
- A Shiny Charm (which you can get by completing the Paldean Pokedex) will increase shiny rates to 1/1365.
- Defeating at least 60 Munchlax in a Munchlax Mass Outbreak will increase shiny Munchlax rates to 1/1365.
- Eating a Lv. 3 Sparkling Power sandwhich will increase shiny rates to 1/1024.
So if you combine these factors and defeat at least 60 Munchlax during a Munchlax Mass Outbreak while under the effects of a Lv. 3 Sparkling Power sandwich and in possession of a Shiny Charm, your odds of finding a shiny Munchlax have now reached 1/512. It’ll still take a while, but those odds are much more promising.
You can also reach 1/682 shiny odds (1/512 with a Shiny Charm) by using the classic Masuda Method in which you breed a foreign Pokemon with your own to hatch a shiny Pokemon, but you won’t be able to get shiny Munchlax in this way. To hatch a Munchlax, you would have to breed a Snorlax holding a Full Incense (Munchlax itself is not breedable), but Full Incense is not currently obtainable in Scarlet and Violet, so it is not possible to hatch a Munchlax through breeding at this time.
However, if your ultimate goal is to get a shiny Snorlax, the Masuda Method is certainly the preferred method. We recommend breeding a foreign Ditto (which you can get using the code 4448-4448 while trading online after offering up your own domestic Ditto) with any Snorlax. After around 700 eggs, you’re bound to have hatched a shiny Snorlax.
Now that you have Munchlax on your team, now’s a great time to catch the Snorlax taking a big snooze in front of a cave.
