Where to Begin the D4 Midwinter Blight

First things first – head to Kyovashad in the Fractured Peaks on a seasonal character of any level. Just to the left of the teleporter, you’ll find the Midwinter Square, as well as the bard Gileon. You can see an image of the square above.

Just speak with Gileon to get the down-low: you’ll be trekking across the Fractured Peaks and slaying the minions of the Red Cloaked Horror. Doing so will grant you materials to bring back to the square to increase its festiveness and earn yourself some rewards.

Increasing the “tier” of the Midwinter Square by turning in materials (which are then converted to Midwinter Proofs) will grant you a Greater Midwinter Spoils pouch for free. This pouch contains Legendary and Rare gear, a Gileon’s Brew (which boosts xp notably for an hour), Potent Blood, and gold.

There isn’t a “quest” associated with the event, just a brief introduction provided by Gileon. He sells a myriad of goods, mostly cosmetic, which you can buy with those Midwinter Proofs you receive from turning in your materials. Let’s take a look at the materials, where to get them, and how they convert to Proofs.

How to Earn Midwinter Proofs in Diablo IV

Midwinter Proofs are a currency that can be earned by exchanging a variety of materials, all found within the Fractured Peaks, for them at the Midwinter Square:

  • Blighted Fragments: 300 / Proof
    • Dropped by Blighted prefix enemies in the Fractured Peaks
  • Lost Heirlooms: 30 / Proof
    • Found in Frigid Husk totems and as a reward from some Fractured Peaks public events
  • Red Cloaked Trophy: 1 / Proof
    • Dropped by the Red Cloaked Horror event boss. He appears at the end of Blighted Revelry public events

As you can see, the most efficient way to get Midwinter Proofs quickly is to kill the Red Cloaked Horror and complete public events. Some events, like the “Defend the Caravan” activity, spawn only Blighted enemies, meaning you’ll earn a ton of Blighted Fragments while participating. I’d suggest moseying around in search of events (indicated by orange circles on your minimap) and grabbing any Frigid Husks you find along the way.

Midwinter Blight Cosmetic Prices and Time to Farm

Cosmetics are priced as follows:

  • Back Ornaments: 50 Proofs
  • Mount Trophy: 30 Proofs
  • Weapons: 20 Proofs

All the limited-time cosmetics added together comes to 440 Midwinter Proofs. After about an hour of feverish grinding, I had earned.. 15. This comes out to about 25 – 30 hours spent in the Fractured Peaks, killing enemies, completing events, and completing the Blighted Revelry event to kill the Red Cloaked Horror to earn everything.

That’s.. a lot of holiday joy, isn’t it? I can’t say I’m game for that level of grind, especially since enemy density leaves much to be desired in the Fractured Peaks. Barring a buff to the number of Blighted Enemies or how many Blighted Fragments they drop, I can’t see many people at all being able to complete their ensemble for every class.

It’s also worth noting that Gileon sells the aforementioned “Gileon’s Brew,” which grants a hefty 15% experience boost for a single Midwinter Proof. If you’re more interested in boosting your level than your fashion, this is a pretty easy choice – that’s three times the usual 5% boost potions give, and it features a chunky 15% boost to Lucky Hit Chance, too.
