Since the introduction of the Mii characters, Nintendo hasn’t done a lot with them. They can be good fun here and there, but for the most part Nintendo hasn’t gone all out to really bring the Mii characters into their own. All of that will change with the release of Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS. What was originally planned to be included in Smash Brawl has finally made it into the latest installment of the series, Mii Fighters.
There are three different varieties of Mii Fighters: Brawler style, Gunner style and Swordfighter style. In addition to playing very differently, each Mii variant has 12 special moves to choose from (three for each of the four special attack options). With this much variety, the casual crowd will have a large number of options in order to customize their Mii Fighter to play however they want. Meanwhile, the competitive crowd will likely break down each variant to find the very best combination for competitive play.
The Mii Brawler is your standard close range combatant. Many of its attacks are similar to Little Mac in that he’s a very grounded fighter. You won’t be dishing out a lot of damage in the air or from a distance, although the Mii Brawler does have a few aerial options. We won’t know exactly how good these attacks are until we get our hands on the Mii Brawler, but if we look at Little Mac, he does have a few aerial attacks that stand out, so hopefully the Mii Brawler will as well.
If you’re a fan of Samus or Mega Man, the Mii Gunner should be right up your alley. While the Gunner seems to favor Mega Man over Samus in terms of their attack similarities, the main point to take home here is that they attack from a distance. The Mii Gunner has a variety of projectile attack options that allow then to dish out considerable damage from across the screen. They aren’t quite as lethal at close range, but they do have a few melee attacks to help them deal with opponents who like to apply close-range pressure.
The Mii Swordfighter is an interesting mix of the Mii Brawler and Mii Gunner. While their primary form of attack is using a sword (which has longer reach than most of the Mii Brawler’s attacks), they also have a few projectile attacks that can be used from a distance. These projectile attacks don’t seem to be as powerful as the gun blasts from the Mii Gunner, but they’re effective nonetheless.
Essentially, you have the Mii Brawler for close-range combat, the Mii Gunner for long-range combat, and the Mii Swordfighter as a more rounded character choice. All of the Mii Fighters have plenty of aesthetic customizations as well to ensure that you can make each Mii Fighter your own, and distinguish it from the crowd.
