In a post-apocalyptic world overrun by rabid creatures, one of the biggest threats to your safety is one that you may least expect–other human survivors. This is the core premise of SIE Bend Studio’s upcoming action adventure game, Days Gone. This open-world survival game not only offers the heart-pumping thrills of decimating feral creatures in a post-apocalyptic setting, but it also explores the nature of humanity and the scope of what survival truly entails.
Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Days Gone is an open-world survival horror game that takes place two years after a global pandemic has ravaged the world, leaving behind millions of mutated people in its wake. Rather than zombies, these feral creatures are called Freakers, and they are just one of many dangers that loom in the dark wilderness. Freakers are quickly evolving into new variants that exhibit unique behaviors and capabilities, which means players must adapt to survive the onslaught of these undead hordes.
Players take on the role of Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter who prefers to stay on the move than succumb to a sheltered life in one of the many survivor camps tucked away in the forest. Deacon is no stranger to life on the run, as he was formerly an outlaw biker who was in the habit of doing what was necessary to survive.
In the world of Days Gone, its often the human survivors that pose the biggest threat. With drifters, bandits, and other hostile groups setting up encampments in the wilderness, the only things you can really trust are your instincts, and your faithful motorcycle.
There are multiple ways to approach threats and complete objectives in Days Gone. You can plot a stealth ambush on an unsuspecting camp of marauders, or go in guns blazing to liberate the camp and create a fast travel point for later. There’s plenty of ways to customize your experience in Days Gone and cater the gameplay to your personal preferences and play style.
For having a post-apocalyptic setting, Days Gone certainly has a lot of eye-catching environments to enjoy as well, which will look stunning in 4K on the PS4 Pro. Since the game takes place in the high-desert of the Pacific Northwest, there’s plenty of ecological diversity to explore in the game. From lush forests to scorched deserts, you’ll likely find yourself riding through new areas just to take in the sights.
There are plenty of zombie survival games to choose from these days, which is why a game like Days Gone stands out from the crowd like a flare in the night sky. While Days Gone will fulfill your craving to slay massive hordes of ravenous undead creatures, the game also takes a deeper look at the true nature of survival–desperation, trust, and above all else, hope.
