Rounding off today’s Nintendo Direct announcements was the surprise reveal of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch. Originally released on Game Boy back in 1993, Link’s Awakening is being fully revived for Nintendo Switch with updated graphics and features.
One thing that immediately sets Link’s Awakening apart from other Legend of Zelda titles is its location, with Link’s Awakening being set on Koholint Island rather than Hyrule. In the story, gamers follow Link after he shipwrecks on a strange island isolated from the rest of the world.
To leave the island, Link is tasked with tracking down eight different instruments needed to wake the Wind Fish, the island’s magical guardian. As of right now, little is known about Link’s Awakening beyond its original premise, new reveal trailer, and estimated 2019 release date.
In the reveal trailer description, Nintendo teases:
“Originally released for the Game Boy™ system more than 25 years ago, one of the most beloved games in the Legend of Zelda series returns. In this modern re-imagining, players once again return to the mysterious island of Koholint to guide Link on a perilous adventure. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening arrives exclusively on Nintendo Switch in 2019.”
