Despite changing hands and numerous rumors of cancellation, Dead Island 2 is reportedly still in development. News about the upcoming sequel has either been grim or non-existant since the zombie game was initially announced. With so many various reports citing its cancellation, it looks like a change of hands once more confirms that Dead Island 2 is still in the works.
Now in the hands of Dambuster Studios courtesy of THQ Nordic, the zombie title is still shooting for an Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC date – which is a little odd given that next-gen officially kicks off next year and it’s already mid-August. Still, perhaps it will be a cross-gen title, we honestly have no idea at this point.
After Dead Island 2 was announced in 2014, the sequel fell victim to a wide variety of road bumps that affected work on the title. After a split with its previous developer and Deep Silver, production was moved to Sumo Digital in 2016. With few updates here and there, news – as mentioned before – has been scarce, though a listing for the title did appear for a short time on the Microsoft store just before E3 2018.
With the news of the most recent change of hands with Dambuster, at least fans of the fast-paced zombie game know it’s still on the way and hasn’t been abandoned for good. As disappointing as it is not to have the original dev team on it, perhaps a fresh perspective could do this game well.
While we await official news, here’s what you need to know about the first game:
