Back in March when the world saw its peak in terms of the continuous spread of COVID-19, Sony mentioned that at that point in time the PlayStation 5 production would not see a delay and will still make its launch time by Holiday 2020. Since then, quarantine numbers continue to grow as the virus continues to spread in certain parts of the world, so has that delay fear seen reality? According to Sony: no, the PlayStation 5 launch is still “on track.”
The latest update doesn’t come from a fluffed up interview, instead the latest production update can be found in a recent financial statement made public by Sony. In their most recent breakdown for the road leading up to March 31, 2021, Sony promises that everything is still going according to plan when looking to launch the next generation of gaming.

“Regarding the launch of PlayStation 5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to the part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season,” Sony detailed in a recent financial report. “At this point in time, major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.”
The continued effects of COVID-19 are still going strong with many locations lifting their quarantines only to go back into them after immediate surges, as seen in China, the US, and parts of Europe. This virus has impacted the world both on an economic level and a medical level as well as changing our integrated daily routines. The economic impact has caused many companies to shutter their doors permanently while others are still in a transitory period in figuring out how to pivot from here.
Both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 system launches both seem untouched by COVID-19, though both parties have mentioned that the same can’t be said for launch titles and subsequent releases. Since neither console has an exact date revealed at this time, saying that a “no delay” has occured does offer a margin of error since the generic “holiday 2020” tag leaves room for some helpful maneuvering.
While the virus continues to spread and industries continue to adapt, it’s important to keep in mind that the CDC has been outlining protective measures for how people can remain safe during this very odd time. Keep your distance, be smart, and wash those hands!
