WWE 2K22 was looking like the series’ last chance at survival. After developer Yukes left the team and Visual Concepts had to scramble to finish a game by itself, 2K 2020 was considered a disaster. But after taking a year off, the effort seems to have paid off in pleasing the top brass at WWE.
Nothing explicit has been said, but based on a recent tweet from the WWE 2K feed, the post-launch period seems to be going well. This isn’t the kind of thing a social team would be pushing out there if there wasn’t a reason to. So, check it out:
Again, nothing is confirmed here; we’re reacting to a tweet until something more concrete comes along. But the narrative this year seems to be a big shift, from WWE 2K22 being well-received, to the relationship between 2K and WWE ostensibly becoming more positive.
This is notable, because rumors were beginning to spread earlier this month that WWE had been in talks with EA about jumping ship. And previously before that, word was floating around that WWE was losing patience with 2K after multiple years of problematic releases. Talks between EA and WWE aren’t new (talks always happen, don’t look into it much), but the context here made it, you know, Hit Different.
Meanwhile, despite often being blamed for the 2K series’ hardships, Yuke’s has been working on an AEW game, developing a game more inspired by AKI’s “No Mercy” game back from the WWF days.
