Bayonetta 3 took home the gold for Best Action Game at The Game Awards 2022 this year, stomping Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Neon White, Sifu, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge beneath her gun heels. It’s unsurprising that PlatinumGames, Bayonetta 3’s developer, took this time to announce that a new game will be coming to the Bayonetta franchise with an announcement trailer.
But it’s probably not one you’d expect.
Bayonetta Gets a Fairytale Makeover with Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon
The Bayonetta series has been defined by over the top, flashy, and distinctly sexy action gameplay. It’s easy to destroy a keyboard or controller trying to pull off some of the most powerful attack combos as you fight the Angels of Paradiso. But PlatinumGames has revealed in a new trailer for Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon for the Nintendo Switch.

This trailer shows off Bayonetta’s new design direction, which is distinctly colorful and soft, which fits the fairytale book it’s in. But despite this much rounder and sweeter aesthetic, it’s still an action game, and Cereza will soon learn to summon a demon, who she’ll use to fight off the monsters that haunt the forest she travels through. A task that’s necessary if she wants to save her mother.
This origin story will finally reveal more about Cereza’s mother and who Cereza was before she became the powerful Umbral witch Bayonetta. And for those who felt let down by Bayonetta 3’s lackluster story, it’s likely that the narrative of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon will be much more cohesive and thoughtful.
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon will be released on the Nintendo Switch on March 17, 2023.
