Mortal Kombat is a gruesome fighting game franchise with blood and death as one of the main calling cards of the series. When guest characters starting being introduced, the selection was partially limited because it had to be a character that could be cut up without potentially ruining the image of that character. You weren’t going to see Master Chief in a Mortal Kombat game because there was no way Microsoft was going to let him get cut up like most MK fatalities tend to do.
With Mortal Kombat 9, we saw the introduction of Freddy Krueger as a guest character. This made sense because he’s a horror movie icon and one of his trademarks is killing. He fit very well in the Mortal Kombat series. Fast-forward to Mortal Kombat X and we see the inclusion of Jason Voorhees and a Predator. Once again, both of these guest characters fit well into the MK universe given that they kill for a living.
When Kombat Pack 2 was announced, it surprised many to find that Leatherface was included in the group of four characters. We’ve covered the other new characters, Tri-Borg, Bo Rai Cho and a Xenomorph, so let’s delve into what you should expect from Leatherface.
First and foremost, while Leatherface has been known to use a few different weapons, his trademark weapon is a chainsaw. Jason only has a machete in one of his variations, but it’s unlikely we’ll see the same treatment with Leatherface. He uses traps which may come into play with his special moves or fatalities, but he is most well-known for his chainsaw and that should be the case in each variation.
His family plays a role in many of the films, so it should be interesting to see if they’ll also play a part in his attacks. We have yet to really see any character gain assists from helper characters, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Even if it’s just a throw that includes a family member, or even if we only see the family member instructing Leatherface to kill his opponent during the fight entrance, don’t be surprised to see some element of Leatherface’s family present in Mortal Kombat X.
Leatherface is commonly known to wield his chainsaw above his head as he runs like a maniac toward his victim. You can see this in the trailer above as he takes down Ermac. There are already several characters in Mortal Kombat X that use some form of dashing attack, and this could very well be the case with Leatherface. The enhanced version would likely have armor as well similar to Jason’s high-hitting dash attack. We could even see this as a dashing throw attack where he dashes toward the victim, and if the attack connects, he stabs them through the gut with the chainsaw.
Jason is a relatively slow character when you take his walk speed into account, but he has a few attacks that allow him to cover ground pretty quickly. We don’t expect Leatherface to be a fast character, but when he runs he moves quickly. Expect him to have faster movement than Jason, but without the teleports.
One of the characters from Kombat Pack 2 will be demoed during the ESL finals later this month. Check back with Prima Games for a detailed breakdown of that character. In the meantime, be sure to check out our Mortal Kombat X game hub for strategies and combos for every character in the game.
