This week, we received not one but two action-packed demos of Star Wars Battlefront. The first showcased intense action on the ice planet Hoth, with Rebel and Imperial forces battling on the ground and in the air, with cameos by Darth Vader and Luke Skywaker in his Return of the Jedi gear, green lightsaber in hand. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch this video.
Despite putting EA’s multiplayer-focused shooter at the top of our must have lists, thoughts of single player crept into our heads. Yes, we want to team up with friends and pilot TIE Fighters and X-wings in large-scale battles, but what if we need practice to improve our skills, or want to goof around? Enter Battlefront’s Survival Mode.
Think of it as Horde and Firefight from the Gears of War and Halo franchises, respectively. Except this time, you outlast 15 waves of progressively difficult Stormtroopers, AT-STs and whatever the Galactic Empire decides to throw at you while on Tatooine. In addition to slaughtering the AI solo, you even have the option of playing with a friend online, or enjoying couch co-op via split-screen; the latter is only available for PS4 and Xbox One.
The plot, what there is of it, centers on the player crash landing on Tatooine, then attempting to survive the Imperial onslaught until the Rebel Alliance sends help. You start off with a standard issue blaster, and it seems there are at least three pieces of equipment and/or abilities mapped to the L1 (grenades), Triangle (shield) and R1 (jetpack) buttons on the PS4 DualShock. On top of that, the game rewards your accomplishments, such as headshots, enemies defeated and killstreaks.
Survive a wave and the Rebels send a drop pod. Claim the pod and it seems like you’ll gain access to new pieces of equipment. What these are remains to be seen.
Based on the demo, enemies include those aforementioned Stormtroopers and AT-STs, but also Shocktroopers, camouflaged Shadowtroopers, Scout Troopers (the guys riding Speeder Bikes in Jedi) and even TIE Fighters. You’ll face off against these adversaries on every planet in the game including Hoth, Endor and Sullust. If the game is too easy, up the difficulty to earn stars for completing different challenges. Among them, not using an extra life.
Battlefront’s Survival mode seems like a great way to pass the time, and thankfully EA has more plans for single player, with Trial, Battle and Hero Battle Missions for players who need to blow off some steam while sticking it to the Emperor’s minions. We’ll post new details in the coming weeks, but for now, watch this incredible-looking footage.
Yes, Star Wars Battlefront looks gorgeous, but did you see the new demo for Uncharted 4: Among Thieves?
