10. Baraka’s Lifting Stab (Mortal Kombat 2)

Baraka is a primitive creature, and he knows how to kill someone. In Mortal Kombat 2, he can either behead his opponent entirely, or even better, stab them deep in the stomach and lift them into the air, only for them to twitch for several seconds before eventually sliding down his blades. Looks uncomfortable.

9. Noob Saibot’s Make a Wish (Mortal Kombat)

This fatality isn’t pretty, as it basically consists of Noob Saibot summoning a secondary dark half and ripping his opponent to pieces. No, literally. They start at the legs, then work their way down to the torso and the head.

8. Kitana’s Kiss of Death (Mortal Kombat 2)

You thought Sonya’s Kiss of Death from the original Mortal Kombat was a painful way to go? She’s got nothing on Kitana. She finishes off her opponent – male and female alike – by kissing them on the check. Inexplicably, this causes them to inflate like a balloon and explode into a thousand pieces. Who wants a smooch?

7. Johnny Cage’s Nut Buster (Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks)

Johnny Cage has plenty of painful moves on this list, but the Nut Buster takes the cake. He will literally punch someone in the groin several times, only to show a quick glance to the camera and knock off their legs entirely. We’ve heard of guys having their balls busted, but this is ridiculous.

6. Ermac’s Mind Over Splatter (Mortal Kombat)

Ermac definitely means business when it comes to ripping his opponent apart in battle – because that’s just what he does. For his fatality, he tears off the arms and legs of his foes while they’re still alive, then flips them upside down and smashes their heads into the pavement. Yikes.

5. The original Pit fatality (Mortal Kombat)

Over the years, Mortal Kombat’s Pit fatalities have gotten more and more extreme – but nothing beats a classic. Knocking your opponent off the high bridge, only to have them land in a field of spikes is definitely a painful way to go.

4. Dairou’s Eye Stab (Mortal Kombat: Deception)

Sometimes it’s best if you don’t see your own death. At least, that’s how Dairou, ahem, sees it. His fatality involves yanking a pair of ribs from his adversary’s chest and then using them to stab the poor opponent right in the eyes. Ten bucks says they didn’t see that coming.

3. Kung Lao’s Blade Drag (Mortal Kombat)

We mentioned how cool Kung Lao’s razor tipped hat is, and with his second fatality in the newest Mortal Kombat, he puts it to great use. He sets the hat on the ground like a spinning blade and then proceeds to drag his fallen opponent all the way through it, only to hold up their split halves at the end. Ouch.

2. Kano’s Heart Rip (Mortal Kombat)

We’re not sure if the MK developers were inspired by the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but nevertheless, his fatality is certainly heart-stopping. He reaches into the chest of his opponent and pulls out their still-beating heart while they drop dead on the ground.

1. Sub-Zero’s Beheading, Complete with Spine (Mortal Kombat)

You knew that Mortal Kombat wasn’t just another Street Fighter clone the instant you saw Sub-Zero pull off the greatest fatality in Mortal Kombat history. There are no fancy tricks here – the blue-hooded ninja simply walks up to his opponent and rips their heads off their shoulders, with spinal column still attached. Classic.
