During the PlayStation Showcase, Bungie finally revealed its first new project in almost a decade. Marathon, similarly named to its original 1994 game, is a sci-fi extraction shooter.
While Bungie did not show any gameplay, we received a trailer in the showcase to show off the visuals, set pieces, and vibes of Marathon.
Bungie Reveals New Extraction Shooter Marathon, But Not The One You May Remember
While the new Marathon is not a direct sequel to the 1994 classic, but something that “belongs in the same universe, in the same universe and feels like a Bungie game.” according to Game Director Christopher Barrett.
Later, on the PlayStation Blog, Christopher Barrett stated
“Marathon is designed from the start as a PvP-focused game and won’t have a single-player campaign. Instead, with the PvP experience as our foundation, we’re creating opportunities for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the overarching game narrative”

So it will be a bit different from Destiny, Bungie’s currently running live service game. If you’re unfamiliar with extraction shooters, it’s all about looting an environment and making it out without dying and losing everything you brought in.
We’re still unsure how all of these mechanics will work in Marathon or how Bungie is planning to put its own mark on the genre. Check out the trailer below.
It might be a while before we hear more about the game, as there is still no release date. Currently, Bungie still has open positions on its career page looking for people to join the Marathon team. So while the game is still pretty early on, now that it is officially announced, the team can be a little more candid when talking about what players can expect from its new game.
However, despite Sony’s acquisition of Bungie last year, Marathon will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
