With COVID-19, many studios have been announcing delays due to quarantines and Work From Home orders to help get the pandemic under control. While the number of parts for the Final Fantasy VII remake is still unconfirmed, we do at least have the good news that the team is still actively working on part 2 with no delays.
When speaking to The Guardian, co-director Naoki Hamaguchi was joined by producer Yoshinori Kitase to talk a little more about the next step for the beloved remake. The bad news is that we still don’t have a release date, the good news is that it’s still on track: “When we set the release date for the game, nobody could have predicted a global pandemic like this, and the release of the game happening during this unprecedented situation has blindsided us,” Kitase reveals to The Guardian. They added, “at this current time, the team are still making the next game via remote working.”
The pair also added that while a small dip in productivity was expected, they haven’t seen too much of an impact that could derail their internal launch goals.
As for how many parts there will be, the current speculation is set for three parts in total, though that all depends on how the studio decides to divvy up the story. There was talk of having even more parts in favor of smaller releases, meaning faster launches in-between game sections. While the end-goal would be the same no matter what with the storyboard in place, the launch schedule could change depending on how they feel is the most appropriate way to proceed. Do they release a ton of parts for a lesser cost in favor of a quicker release schedule, or do they take their time and have a much more concise drop plan? It seems that that decision is still very much being mulled over and the fanbase seems divided on which one they would prefer.
