The spooky trailer gives a little background to the game’s sinister story. Outlast is set in that most classic of scary locales: an abandoned and run-down insane asylum. You play as a investigative journalist off to find out whagwarn up in the messed up hole full of badmen.

The devs working on the game were previously involved in titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia, and the influence clearly shines through in Outlast’s prominent use of parkour.

While graphically a million miles away from the hyper-real pantones of Mirror’s Edge, DICE’s 2008 dystopian run-and-jumper has certainly had an influence in Outlast’s first-person free-running gameplay.

In a conversation with Joystiq, Red Barrel’s co-founder Philippe Morin had the following to say: “the core of the game is pretty much like a stealth game. You have to avoid enemies, hide from enemies and run away from enemies. But the action comes into play when you have to run from them, so this is where we are using our experience making games like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed. To try and make the chases as exciting as possible.”

Running from monsters in the dark and terrifying corridors of Amnesia: The Dark Descent was an influence too. “The thing we’re taking from Amnesia – which, by the way, we liked a lot – is the run and hide,” added Morin.

Outlast sprints its way onto Steam, PC and Mac sometime next year, make sure you watch its Halloween trailer below.
