The Last of Us franchise is one of the most beloved in the video game world with the first entry considered to be one fo the best games of all time and a highly anticipated sequel set to release on May 29th, 2020. Now, the high-profile franchise will be entering an entirely new medium, as HBO has announced that it will be producing a series based on The Last of Us, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.
Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin has joined forces with HBO once again to adapt The Last of Us in a whole new way. Neil Druckmann, Writer and Creative Director of The Last of Us, will work alongside Mazin as an Executive Producer on the original series.
The first television series from PlayStation Productions will be a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and will see Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog President Evan Wells also serve as Executive Producers of the series.
This HBO series will reportedly focus on the events of the first title in The Last of Us franchise, where Joel is hired to help smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out a quarantine zone where they must survive against a variety of apocalyptic threats that are both human and non-human. It is soon revealed that Ellie could potentially hold the key to developing a cure for the pandemic that has thrown the world into pure chaos. There is also the possibility that events from the sequel The Last of Us Part II could also be added into the HBO series in addition to content from the original game.
“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig, I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us,” said Neil Druckmann. “With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”
