During a recent PlayStation 5 showcase, a ton of games were revealed including the long-rumored Horizon Dawn sequel, a Demon’s Souls remake, and so much more. That being said, it was one indie title that truly stole the show and that was the adorably confusing Bugsnax game and in an added twist, it’s got some ties to BioShock.
Bugsnax’s premise is adorable, quirky, and a little left-of-center but what many might not realise is that it also drew heavy inspiration from BioShock. Creative Director Kevin Zuhn recently opened up about the upcoming game with the folks over at GameRevolution saying that BioShock was one of many titles that the team drew inspiration from.
According to Zuhn, the game’s core gameplay loop does have more in common with BioShock than many might realise, but that’s not the only way that inspiration was derived. “The plot does involve you going to a strange location after being invited by this charismatic leader character,” explained Zuhn in the recent interview. “But also Bioshock, mechanically, has a lot of setting traps and playing different characters off of each other. It’s a very reactive world and very explorable world.”
When the game was first revealed, many were confused by the oddly placed trailer and that confusion quickly evolved into theories that this was some form of secret horror game. The BioShock comparisons don’t really help prove against that theory, but whatever it is – we’re on board, apparently.

Other inspirations behind Bugsnax includes Dark Cloud, Pokemon Snap, Viva Pinata (which should be obvious), and Ape Escape. While we only have the first reveal trailer to base off of, this definitely looks like one of those charming games that sticks with the community, in a positive way, for a very long time.
