Shadow Fall takes place after the Petrusite detonation that rendered the planet Helghan uninhabitable in Killzone 3, now referred to as the Terracide. The war between the Vektans and Helghast was over in a matter of seconds. A billion lives were lost in the fires that swept the planet, reducing it to nothing more than a lifeless rock. In the days that followed, a truce was negotiated and a settlement was reached. The Helghast survivors were granted refuge on Vekta, home of those responsible for Helghan’s destruction. Half the planet was given to the survivors, calling it New Helghan. A massive security fortification called the Wall was constructed to separate the two civilizations from each other.
As the cut scene ends, you take control of Lucas Kellan, a child who along with his father, Michael Kellan, must escape to safety on the Vekta side of The Wall. Simply follow your father and vault over the two ledges as instructed. He will take you through a series of obstacles that are really just an in-game tutorial to teach you the basic controls.
Lucas and Michael will meet up with Sinclair, a Shadow Marshal who offers to help them get to safety. It’s more of the same here. Just keep following Sinclair and Michael until you get to the jammed door. Climb up as instructed and drop through the ceiling. Move back to the door and remove the board that jammed it.
As you continue to make your way to The Wall, Sinclair will go ahead, leaving Michael and Lucas to wait. Helghast forces will spot you, wounding Michael in the left shoulder. As he pleads with them to allow him and Lucas to pass, they shoot and kill him. Lucas screams in horror before Sinclair returns and takes out the soldiers with his knife. As Lucas wonders what will happen now that Michael is dead, Sinclair is there to comfort you, saying he will take care of Lucas.
The game enters another cut scene — taking place 20 years later — showing Lucas with a bag over his head as you flash back to Sinclair mentoring you. The first flashback is eight years later, as Sinclair tells you that you’re the youngest cadet to ever be admitted to the Shadow Marshal Academy. Then 10 years later, Sinclair is explaining that all their people want is to be kept safe, and that means taking the fight to the Helghast. He tells Lucas that it’s still Vekta over there, and one day Lucas is going to get it back. The final flashback is 14 years later and Sinclair is congratulating Lucas on making the Shadow Marshal program. Lucas must go to the other side of The Wall, but Sinclair warns that if you’re caught, you’ll be executed.
The bag is removed from your head to reveal you’re in restraints. Two Helghast soldiers stand in front of you, explaining how sickening it is to have to live alongside the people who destroyed their planet. They warn that the Wall won’t protect the Vektans forever, that the Helghast will march through and take the rest of your city. You’re led to the middle of a bridge where you see a female figure who the Helghast will exchange you for. The exchange goes wrong, with someone opening fire, knocking everyone to the ground. Follow the on-screen instructions and grab the weapon, taking out the Helghast soldier. Your female counterpart punches you, knocking you to the ground before running off, ending the chapter.
