We are definitely in the age of videogame adaptations. From TV series to full-blown movies, they’re coming despite a very rocky history of failed attempts and cringe-worthy failures. Still, one game franchise we wouldn’t mind seeing a talented team take on would be BioShock and it seems like one Mortal Kombat writer wants his shot at an official BioShock movie.
The wonderfully talented Adam Barnhardt (ComicBook) recently sat down with Greg Russo, the writer behind the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, to talk about other ambitious plans for the future. Who knew that could include a BioShock movie? “I would love to figure out a way to do BioShock and I’ve tried,” Russo said. “I’ve been like elbowing everybody I can possibly find, because I think I have a really awesome way to do it that would be really fun. And bring the horror of it to the forefront and hopefully keep the budget at a manageable price. But yeah, that’s one that I’d absolutely adore, that be a lot of fun to work on.”
BioShock has evolved so much throughout the three games, I personally would love to see how that would translate to the big screen. If done right, it could be a horror story for the ages. If done wrong, well … it wouldn’t be alone.
As for the Mortal Kombat movie itself, Russo confirmed earlier this year that it will in fact be R-rated and include some gruesome fatalities. “Since it’s already been stated by other members of the team, I’m gonna put this one to bed. MK WILL be R-Rated and for the first time EVER, FATALITIES will FINALLY be on the big screen (and no I’m not gonna say which ones),” reads the above tweet. “You’ll just have to wait for the movie & see!!! ;)”
The reaction to his earlier statement was a good indicator of how much this news weighed on interested fans and it’s good to see that Russo is not shying away from what Mortal Kombat is about in favor of “Hollywoodification.”
We don’t have a release date yet for the film, though we do know that the script is done and production is to begin soon. The original movie was a guilty pleasure of mine is that I absolutely adored the 1995 film, making the reboot news something that I’m cautiously excited for. Seeing the martial arts tournament that we knew so well from the games in real life (or real screen) was incredible, even if it did get a little bit cheesy from time to time.
