Earlier this past month, an outbreak of a mysterious coronavirus has been seen affecting Wuhan, China. The effects have been seen outside of China for those traveling and now that this contagion has resulted in up to 600 deaths and thousands of confirmed cases, a state of medical emergency has been declared in the region and that decision with wellness in mind has extended out into the world of gaming. One such company affected is Obsidian Entertainment and because of the ongoing coronavirus, The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch release date has been delayed.
Private Division, the publisher for Outer Worlds, took to their Twitter to relay the change of plans. “We’re delaying [The Outer Worlds] on Nintendo Switch due to the coronavirus impacting the Virtuos team working on the port,” the Twitter post reads. They added, “to provide them enough time to finish development. We’ll now be releasing the physical version on cartridge. Once we have a new launch date, we’ll let you all know!”
To clarify, the team at Virtuos is ok, but their office has remained closed during this time. We’re working with the team to determine an updated development timeline, and will share more regarding a new launch date shortly.

Thankfully, the team over at Virtuous is alright, but want to remain with their doors closed for safety reasons, which is completely understandable. We don’t have a new release date at this time, but we should be learning something more concrete later this month.

For more about the game itself:
“In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds.
