Back in February, Sony promised several innovations with the PlayStation 4, including making it possible to play games within local proximity of the system with your PlayStation Vita. Today, it confirmed that this is one step closer to happening.

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, announced that a PlayStation 4-related application will be released for the PS Vita, free of charge, with the system’s next firmware update. Said Yoshida in a tweet, “We’ll add ‘PS4 Link’ app to PS Vita with the next update.’ A date has not yet been confirmed for this update, though it’s likely to be released before the system hits store shelves on November 15th.

This is on top of the application that’s also coming to iOS and Android, which will let users perform functions on their PlayStation Network account, including friend messaging and the ability to purchase items on the PlayStation Network. There’s no word when these will arrive, but they’re also expected before the system’s launch.
