PlayStation 5 Specs Revealed, PS5 Details

Here is our first look at the PS5 specs for those excited for PlayStation 5.

Earlier this week we were given a full first look at the Xbox Series X and now it’s PlayStation 5’s turn. We’ve got our first look at the PS5 specs, including how they stay true to their model while making their next system the most powerful yet.

The PlayStation 5 spec showcase is going on now, which you can watch in the video below, but first, let’s break down the specs in question including the GPU architecture with a custom RDNA 2 and its increased memory and internal storage. On the left we have the PlayStation 5 specs while on the right we see the current generation’s stats:

CPU 8x Zen 2 Cores at 3.5GHz (variable frequency) 8x Jaguar Cores at 1.6GHz
GPU 10.28 TFLOPs, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz (variable frequency) 1.84 TFLOPs, 18 CUs at 800MHz
GPU Architecture Custom RDNA 2 Custom GCN
Memory/Interface 16GB GDDR6/256-bit 8GB GDDR5/256-bit
Memory Bandwidth 448GB/s 176GB/s
Internal Storage Custom 825GB SSD 500GB HDD
IO Throughput 5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed) Approx 50-100MB/s (dependent on data location on HDD)
Expandable Storage NVMe SSD Slot Replaceable internal HDD
External Storage USB HDD Support USB HDD Support
Optical Drive 4K UHD Blu-ray Drive Blu-ray Drive

The team over at Sony also analyzed CPU and GPU performance and how to make it even better, including temperature drops. “Rather than look at the actual temperature of the silicon die, we look at the activities that the GPU and CPU are performing and set the frequencies on that basis – which makes everything deterministic and repeatable,” said Mark Cerny in a recent presentation. “While we’re at it, we also use AMD’s SmartShift technology and send any unused power from the CPU to the GPU so it can squeeze out a few more pixels.”
