On September 27, 2023, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced his retirement in March 2024 after 28 years with the company. Reactions to the news have been mixed; some PlayStation and Xbox fans seem to be having an absolute field day with the news, while others have wished him good luck.
“As you will have seen today in the news, I have announced my retirement after nearly 30 years at Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Ryan wrote in a post on the SIE Blog, explaining his decision to retire since joining in 1994. “I did not take this decision lightly and I absolutely love SIE and our community, but of late I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to strike the right balance between having my home in the UK and my job in the United States.”
Social media has been awash with reactions to the bombshell, with PlayStation fans seemingly divided on whether the move will be a good thing for the developer and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
“PlayStation community…” one user wrote in response to a Twitter (X) post from Sony Interactive Entertainment announcing Ryan’s retirement. Attached was a video of a crowd going absolutely wild with delight, implying that PlayStation fans are happy with the news.
“Best Playstation news in a decade,” another replied.
Others simply wished him well. “Man, 30 years is one hell of a career, fully understand his choice to prioritize family at his age and success, best of luck to Jim Ryan,” a response read.
“Wish he has a wonderful retirement,” said another.
Once Ryan retires in March 2024, Hiroki Totoki will take up the mantle as appointed Interim CEO of SIE until a suitable replacement is found.
