Far Cry 5 received a lot of attention when Ubisoft announced that the game would take place in Montana and focus on battling a group of religious zealots. Since that reveal, new gameplay videos and trailers increased the hype, and now that Far Cry 5 has finally released, fans are diving into what some might say is one of the best Far Cry games to date. Featuring the staple action-packed gameplay of the series, as well as several features like fishing and full gun customization, Far Cry 5 is a fun, frantic shooter with a lot to offer.
Gameplay
As a first-person shooter, Far Cry 5’s primary gameplay will be spent riding around Montana, clearing outposts full of bad people, and taking down enemies. There are a lot of great ways to go about this, and with all kinds of nifty items like the parachute, wingsuit, and grappling hook, you have a near endless amount of ways to kill people. There are also tons of great weapons to make use of in the game, which allows you to cater to your playstyle and take out enemies whichever way suits you best.
On top of combat, Far Cry 5 also has a lot of other great features. Players can go hunting, complete stunts, and even fish to earn money. If you’re looking for something different, though, Far Cry 5 also launched with an in-depth map editor that allows you to create your own multiplayer maps and share them with the Far Cry 5 community. This has led to some great creations by players in the community so far, and we’re sure that it will continue to grow as time wears on.
Visuals and Performance
When it comes to looks and performance, Ubisoft has done a great job with the Dune Engine. The game world looks beautiful, and everything about Far Cry 5 feels good, no matter what platform you’re playing it on. Grass looks realistic as it trembles in the wind, and the lush, dense forests seem to come alive as you explore.
Even in the midst of intense combat, we never saw much of a performance drop, despite the fact that explosions, fire, and bullets were reigning down upon the area. It’s a very well optimized experience. Case in point, flying through the air—forcing the game to load in lots of resources all at one time—didn’t cause any kind of FPS drops on the PlayStation 4, which was definitely something good to see in the game this gorgeous.
Game of the Week
The Far Cry series has evolved quite a bit since the first entry, and Far Cry 5 feels like the next logical step in the formula. The use of a fully-detailed multiplayer map editor gives the community so much room to play. The story itself is interesting, and there are a ton of small pieces within the world that are worth exploring and searching for.
Far Cry 5 has action in spades, and just clearing outposts and taking out bad guys feels epic due to how many different weapons that you have. With such a beautiful backdrop, a good story, and even better gameplay, Far Cry 5 has more than earned a place as our Prima Game of the Week.
