Capcom’s Resident Evil Village Showcase aired this afternoon, and the results of it are hard to nail down so far. You can never tell in those rascally live chats! The event largely focused on the upcoming Resident Evil Village, but there were a few additional announcements in the back half of the event. One of these things is not like the others.
Resident Evil Village
This was the meat of the show, and as such we’re covering the highlights from those announcements separately, as you can see here and here. To make a long story short, we saw new gameplay along with a new trailer, showing us more of the uh, Tall Vampire Lady the internet is in love with. We got a release date and confirmation that the plans to get Village on the PS4/Xbox One worked out, along with confirmation of two demos. One demo is a stand-alone experience, and is exclusive to the PS5.
Re:Verse Resident Evil
It’s the 25th anniversary of Resident Evil, and that milestone is being celebrated with a new, free multiplayer game that’s packed in with Resident Evil Village. Featuring a large cast of characters from the modern Resident Evil series, Re:Verse Resident Evil is a deathmatch shooter with a comic book-like visual filter. You start rounds by picking your favorite characters, but if you’re taken down you get to come back as one of several Bioweapons, such as Nemesis or Mr. X.
The Division 2?
A Ubisoft representative showed up for some reason, mostly to announce that a Resident Evil-themed event is coming to The Division 2 of all games. The event kicks off on February 2, and players who log in through February 15 will receive the Leon Kennedy RPD Outfit just for showing up. The trailer shown noted that players will “collect iconic outfits, weapon skins and more,” so the Leon getup is just the beginning.
Infinite Darkness
Finally, we got a small update on the upcoming, Netflix-exclusive CG movie called Infinite Darkness. Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi didn’t have a whole lot to say, but he did confirm that Infinite Darkness’ story is canon and takes place “a few years” after the events of Resident Evil 4. There’s no release date yet beyond the 2021 window.
Overall it’s easy to say this was a kind of weird event, especially in comparison to what the fans were getting themselves hyped up about. But it was definitely informative in a lot of ways, and shows Capcom is putting a lot of muscle behind Resident Evil Village.
