As part of Ubisoft’s earnings call and reported by outlets like IGN, it’s been confirmed that Skull & Bones has been delayed… again. Originally announced back in 2017, Skull & Bones first targeted a 2018 release before being delayed to 2019, 2020, 2021, and now 2022.
Skull & Bones Delayed to 2022
Skull & Bones won’t release in 2021 thanks to a new delay that pushes the game’s release into 2022. The news comes as part of Ubisoft’s latest earnings call, and through reports from outlets like IGN.
The reason for the latest delay isn’t clear. According to sources speaking with VGC, the decision to delay was made as Skull & Bones pivots towards a live game model. We can’t confirm or deny this as the reason, but we will say that the idea of Skull & Bones shifting focus and direction isn’t new.
Back in September of 2020, Ubisoft shared an update on the status of Skull & Bones. In that update, Ubisoft notes they simply need more time to execute the vision they have for the game.
“Many of you have been wondering why we’ve had to postpone our launch. The answer is that we simply needed more time. We dreamt something bigger for Skull & Bones, and these ambitions naturally came with bigger challenges.
These difficulties resulted in necessary delays for our game. Critical questions needed to be addressed over the past several months such as: how do we modernize the classic pirate fantasy?
How do we ensure a more immersive and visceral experience? How do we create cool and memorable moments in-game? For most of these questions to be answered, it was clear that we needed more development time.”
It’ll be interesting to see where Ubisoft goes with Skull & Bones between now and 2022. Will they pursue the game as a live service, or will they stick closer to their original vision for the game with some key adjustments and gameplay changes?
