During today’s surprise Super Mario Bros. 35 Anniversary Direct, Nintendo announced a slew of goodies to celebrate the portly plumber’s big milestone. That included some toys, board games, compilation releases, and the last-remaining Wii U game in need of a Nintendo Switch port. Yes, the thoroughly good multiplayer romp Super Mario 3D World is coming to the Nintendo Switch, and it’s coming with a little extra on top.

The interesting thing about this upcoming release is that it doesn’t feature the “Deluxe” branding that nearly every other first-party Wii U re-release has been stamped with. That includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, up to the upcoming Pikmin 3 Deluxe. Instead, the full title here is Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, which included a little teaser at the end of the announcement that made Bowser’s Fury look like some sort of additional content for the normal game, or some sort of expansion.
While the game is already available for pre-order on the Nintendo Switch eShop, we don’t know yet exactly what Bowser’s Fury entails. Except for a lot of architecture and vegetation sporting cat ears. We’re here for it. What we do know is that this four-player co-op extravaganza will feature online play this time around, which is a great selling point considering what’s going on outside of video games these days. Plus, not needing to gather people and controllers is an added bonus.
This is a full retail release, so it’s going to run customers the full $59.99 to pick it up digital or retail. The funniest part of this whole thing is that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is one of the only announced games from the Direct that isn’t saddled with a bizarre, temporary release date. So if you missed it on Wii U and still want to play it, and that’s probably most Nintendo fans, you’ll be able to pick it up starting on February 21, 2021.
