When the world first learned about the interactive Super Nintendo World theme park opening up in Japan, and the rest of the world later, the excitement felt was immediate. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a major kink in those plans and now that the pandemic is back on the rise in many places, the launch plans for this Nintendo theme park paradise are indefinitely on hold.
While the theme park in Osaka, Japan is mostly completed at this time in terms of construction, the pandemic’s continued growth has many business owners worried about opening those doors. Since the very nature of theme parks means tons of people packed into enclosed spaces, Nintendo has opted to delay the opening until further notice with no open date in mind at this time.
The park itself looks amazing with giant recreations from the Super Mario franchise, truly making it an immersive experience for any fan to live their wildest Nintendo-fueled fantasy. Prior to COVID, the theme park was slated for a launch at the beginning of this year, but 2020 had other plans and it was first pushed back until July. Now that July is almost here and the pandemic is back at the forefront, it was clear to Nintendo that now was not the time and the uncertainty of the future made putting a new date a risky move.
With many areas of the world re-opening prematurely only to see dramatic spikes in the spread of COVID, with many going back into quarantines, it’s unclear when normalcy will be achieved. But first, we have to get this pandemic under control with smart behavior, masks, and listening to guidelines so we can all go back to work and doing the things we love to do.
