Alicia Vikander became Lara Croft in the 2019 Tomb Raider movie that adapted the reboot of the games. Though it was met with mixed reviews, it looks like the future of the franchise on the big screen is bright because the Tomb Raider movie sequel not only has its director but a release date as well.
In a recent report from Deadline, the Tomb Raider movie sequel will be releasing in theaters everywhere on March 19, 2021 with Ben Wheatley signed on as the second film’s director. With directorial work on franchises like Strange Angel and Doctor Who paired with his movie work with Kill List and Free Fire, Wheatley has quite the project on his hands.
The first movie saw Roar Uthaug as the director though with Wheatley taking over, it’s confirmed that Uthaug will not be a part of the sequel. That being said, the first movie’s producers will be back with both Graham King and Elizabeth Cantilllon as well as Vikander’s return as the leading lady herself.
The upcoming Tomb Raider movie sequel will mark the fourth film in the franchise, though only second for the rebooted series. The first two movies starred Angelina Jolie in a classic Lara style. Following the reception of the first movie starring Vikander, it will be interesting to see how the new director takes to the latest tribute to Croft and her legacy.
