What is Blackout in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4?

Not sure what the new Blackout mode in Black Ops 4 is? Here’s what we know.

After several weeks of teasing the community, Activision and Treyarch finally pulled back the curtain on the latest Call of Duty game, Black Ops 4. As with previous entries in the series, the new game will come with a multiplayer mode and the ever-iconic Zombies mode. This time, however, they’re also bringing along something different—something entirely new. But, what exactly is this new Blackout mode and what does it entail? Here’s what we know so far.

What is Blackout?

At its core, Blackout is Call of Duty’s answer to battle royale. Similar in ways to games like Fortnite  and PUBG, Blackout will allow players to go head to head in a massive battle to be the last man standing. However, Treyarch wants to make sure they spice things up, and have thus decided to do battle royale the ‘Black Ops way’. What does that mean? Well, let’s get into it.

Basically, according to Treyarch, the map in Blackout is designed to be the biggest map that the developers have ever created, coming in at roughly 1500x the size of Nuketown alone. On top of that, the map will also include several locations from iconic maps in the series, which means fans can look forward to trekking through old paths once more as they fight to be the last man standing.

On top of the map differences, the game mode itself will feature weapons and items that have been popular in previous Black Ops games—including the beloved RC car. This will also be the first time that players will be able to freely move around a Call of Duty map with vehicles, and Blackout will include land, sea, and air vehicles for players to drive around in.

The final thing that Blackout is doing differently, is it is going to include a slew of popular characters from previous entries in the Black Ops series. This means players can take on others as Hudson, Reznov, Mason, and several other iconic characters who have helped bring the Black Ops story to life in previous entries.

It’s a novel idea that definitely gives a new twist to the battle royale experience, and it will be interesting to see it in action as new trailers and gameplay release for the mode. For now, though, all we can do is speculate—something we don’t tend to do here on Prima—so we’ll update you with more information as it becomes available.
