If you have the cursed Necromancy of Thay tome in your possession, you’re going to need a particular stone. Here’s how to get the Dark Amethyst in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Find the Blighted Village (BG3)
To find the Dark Amethyst in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re going to need to find the Blighted Village. Fortunately, this goblin-invested a town is in the center of the map and it’s pretty impossible to miss once you start exploring. But if you haven’t stumbled upon it yet, just go West from the Emerald Grove. You’ll find a bridge, then cross over it.
You’ll immediately encounter goblins, which you can charm into becoming non-hostile or outright kill. Or, if you’re a drow, you can bully them into submission.
Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Find the Dark Amethyst (BG3)
To find the Dark Amethyst, we’ll need to go to the Whispering Depths, which can be accessed through the Blighted Village’s well.
The best way to find it is to go to the Blighted Village waypoint. From there, just to your left, you’ll see a well. Interact with it, and you’ll need to pass a perception check. When you succeed, you’ll realize that there’s a stone floor at the bottom.
Descend the rope, and you’ll find yourself in a spiderweb-coated cave. It’s at the very back of this cave that we’ll find the Dark Amethyst. But to get to it, you’ll need to fight or sneak your way past the Phase Spiders until you reach the Matriarch Phase Spider.
The Dark Amethyst is beneath this massive arachnid. It’s very possible to sneak around these eight-legged foes if you’re very cautious and avoid the webs that alert them. But if you opt to defeat the Matriarch Spider and her clutch of hatchlings, you’ll get the Poisoner’s Robe.
Or you could do what I did and just Eldritch Blast the spider off her web and into the chasm, instantly killing her… and losing the Robes in the process. Yes, I’m still sad about it.
How to Get the Dark Amethyst in Act 3
If you missed the Dark Amethyst in the first Act of BG3, there is a second one you can find in the game’s third Act. The second Dark Amethyst is located in the basement of Philgrave’s Mansion, which you can get to by heading south once you reach Baldur’s Gate’s Lower City. The mansion itself is right beside the Heapside Strand Waypoint, but getting into the mansion can prove a little tricky.
The quickest and easiest way to reach the Dark Amethyst in the Philgrave’s Mansion basement is to head down the flight of stairs toward the beach on the east side of the mansion. At the very base of the wall beside a mound of dirt is a small hole covered by a box. This hole leads directly into the Philgraves Mansion basement. You’ll need to be a small size to enter this hole, so if you’re not playing as a half-pint character such as a Gnome, you’ll need to either have a druid change into a small creature such as a cat or have a character like Shadowheart use Disguise to change themselves into a smaller character.
Alternatively, you can head around to the west side of the mansion where you’ll find an arch in the wall that’s suspiciously shaped like a door…because it is a door. You can lockpick this door by succeeding a DC25 Sleight of Hand check or use the Knock spell to open it up. Once inside, you’ll want to head up the stairs and through a couple more locked doors requiring a DC15 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick. Once you’re at the top of the mansion and in the room full of a pile of rotting corpses, where an obviously fake wall panel can slide open. Behind this wall panel is a ladder that will lead down to the basement.
Once you’re inside the mansion basement, you’ll find the Dark Amethyst sitting on the large desk surrounded by flasks and lab equipment. You can then exit the basement either through the small hole in the wall or up the ladder. Or you can head back into the mansion and speak to its strange resident, Mystic Carrion for a new side quest.
What Does the Dark Amethyst Do in Baldur’s Gate 3? (BG3)
Still, the stone is a necessary component if you want to find and unlock the Necromancy of Thay… and a permanent boost to your Wisdom stat. This is because the Necromancy of Thay is locked, and the Dark Amethyst serves as the key.
But just having the Dark Amethyst isn’t enough. You’ll need to pass several skill checks to get the Wisdom stat boost. And you’ll have to wait until Act 3 to uncover the final page that will let you unlock the powerful Necromancy spell, Danse Macabre, among a host of other benefits which I won’t spoil for you.
