In the most recent patch (check out the Diablo 4 1.0.3 patch notes here), experience gains at endgame were buffed basically across the board. But the most notable increase was to that of Nightmare Dungeons, Diablo 4’s tiered, replayable excursions, which saw their experience nearly tripled as a result of the patch.
Nightmare Dungeons are accessed via Nightmare Sigils, which turn any number of dungeons into their Nightmare variant with randomized modifiers. Sigils come in Tiers from 1 to 100, with higher tiers featuring higher-level enemies. So the big question is what tier should you be shooting for if you’re looking to maximize experience gains in Diablo 4? Well, with a little math, we can find the answer.
The Best Nightmare Dungeon Tier for Your Level, Calculated
To maximize experience gains, you’ll want to run Nightmare Dungeons equal to your current level, minus 51. For example, if you’re level 75, you’ll want to run Nightmare Dungeons that are Tier 24.

For an explanation as to why, read on, but essentially we’re trying to achieve the 25% experience buff that monsters three levels above us grant. Any higher and there’s no further bonus, so we’d be wasting our time.
Monsters in Nightmare Dungeons are the following level: [Monster Level] = [World Tier] + [Dungeon Tier] + 50
But we want monsters to be three levels higher than we are: [Your Level] + 3 = 4 + [Dungeon Tier] + 50
So we simplify the equation to: Dungeon Tier = Your Level – 51 to give us a dungeon with monsters that provide the desired 25% bonus experience.
It might be basic algebra, but it can still be a little confusing! The new patch makes playing Nightmare Dungeons back-to-back more of a breeze than ever thanks to the new teleportation mechanic, which you can read about in our guide on how to travel to Nightmare Dungeons instantly in Diablo 4.
