From casuals to professionals, everyone has a preferred controller to play on. From the humble controller that comes with your console of choice to the fight stick that costs more than my monthly car payment, it’s always interesting to see what players will bring to the table. However, this time around, it involves something I’m passionate about: Mortal Kombat. Does Mortal Kombat 1 feel good to play with a controller, or will you want to perform a fatality on your fingers when you try and input another failed move attempt?
Can You Play Mortal Kombat 1 Well With A Controller?
While I am not a professional Mortal Kombat player, I’ve spent enough time in each game in the franchise to know how to play well. That being said, I’ve also jumped into the games using a variety of different fight sticks, something which I do not own for my PlayStation 5. For this segment, I swapped off between a standard DualSense controller that came with my console and the Victrix Pro BFG controller that I currently use for just about everything else.
And I can happily say, against a Hard CPU, I could hold my own just fine. Both controllers that I used could withstand rapid attack patterns, combos, Kameo withdrawals, and everything else I threw at them. While I may miss the more tactile feeling of a fight stick, I found it quite easy to keep up with the overall control scheme.
However, everybody’s mileage may vary. I’ve been throwing Hadokens since the SNES days, so the feeling of playing a fighting game with a standard controller comes second nature to me at this point. I will say, however, that Mortal Kombat 1 feels the most refined that the series has in quite some time, and during my time with it, I found that it was near impossible to mess up on a combo, no matter the controller I was using.
