Starfield could be a dream come true for long-haulers and truckers at heart. The moment I heard about the Long-Hauler Background, I was sold and ready to take off into the starry skies on an adventure of a lifetime. With my controller, alongside my trusty HOTAS stick, I was beyond eager to jump into my ship and see where it would take me. But did Starfield actually support my HOTAS, or am I left to navigate the Galaxy with either a keyboard and mouse or a controller?
Can You Use HOTAS With Starfield?
Unfortunately, as I quickly discovered, there is no official HOTAS configuration in Starfield. While I’m using an older stick, Saitek ST290 Pro, it’s helped me navigate through Microsoft Flight Simulator on many different occasions. I made sure everything was up to date, I ensured that I had all the proper drivers installed, and there was no reaction from the game when I tried to navigate my ship through space with it.

It’s a bit of a shame, especially since I’m a long-hauler looking to take cargo across the different universes that are available in the game, but there may be a way around it. You could always try using controller mapping software to force the game to recognize your HOTAS as an Xbox controller and hope that it works that way. I’m guessing my Logitech G290 Racing Wheel isn’t going to work like it does in American Truck Simulator at this point, either.
With games continuing to add support for extra peripherals down the line, there is a chance, albeit a slim one, that we see official HOTAS support added for Starfield in the future. Until then, we may need to do what fans of DLSS are doing and mod it into the game.
