After the August 23 release of the 6.2 content patch, Final Fantasy XIV received a plethora of new content for players of all types to enjoy. One of the new features is the Island Sanctuary, a private getaway for Warriors of Light to spend their time gathering and crafting, constructing and cultivating, and capturing wild animals to domesticate for special “Leavings” dropped by them once per day. One of the more rare animals available to catch is the beloved Black Chocobo, a special variant of the iconic feathered friends of the Final Fantasy franchise. If you’re looking to turn that “Wark!” into a “Kweh!”, continue reading to learn how to catch a Black Chocobo in FFXIV’s Island Sanctuary.

Capturing Animals in FFXIV Island Sanctuary
In order to capture an animal in Island Sanctuary, you’ll need the correct restraint depending on their size. The Black Chocobo is considered a Medium sized animal, so you’ll need to craft yourself a Makeshift Restraint to catch one. To craft the restraint, you’ll first need to reach Rank 6 in your Sanctuary while gathering the following materials:
- 3 Island Hemp
- 1 Island Copper Ore
Craft yourself a Makeshift Restraint and switch to Capture mode to equip it. No Gysahl Greens necessary this time.
Capturing the Black Chocobo – Weather and Location
Unlike spawns that are based on Eorzean time, the Black Chocobo is a weather-based spawn. This means that it can spawn day or night, but only during “Clear Skies” weather, which can be checked by hovering over the icon around your minimap. If the weather’s right, head over to the north-western tip of the island around the (X: 13, Y: 11) coordinates to find a group of normal Chocobo as well as the elusive Black Chocobo.
This won’t be an easy catch, so you may have to try a few times before you’re successful. Approach the Black Chocobo and use the Makeshift Restraint on them. If you don’t scare them away, you’ll snag yourself a new friend who will be waiting for you back at the pasture in your Island Sanctuary. Treat this one well, as they’ll drop Sanctuary Feather leavings for you if they’re happy and well-fed.
Good luck and happy farming! If you found this guide useful, don’t hesitate to check out our other guides on Final Fantasy XIV here at Prima Games.
