Capturing Animals in FFXIV Island Sanctuary
You won’t be able to take home a Griffin without some serious tools first, so you’ll need to craft a special restraint to stand a chance at taking this sucker home. After reaching Rank 8 in your Island Sanctuary, you are able to craft the Makeshift Soporific, a tool specializing in capturing Large animals like the Griffin. To craft the soporific, gather up the following materials:
- 2 Island Laver
- 1 Island Sap
- 2 Island Jellyfish
Once crafted, you can equip the Makeshift Soporific after switching to Capture mode.
Capturing the Griffin – Time, Weather, and Location
While some rare spawns are based on time and others based on weather, the Griffin is even more elusive as they’re based both on time and weather together. This means that you’ll often only have a few chances per day to catch them in a sometimes very brief window of time.
Between the hours of 3pm to 6pm Eorzean Time and during the “Clear Skies” weather, you can head to the high mountain peaks around the (X: 14, Y: 22) coordinates to spot the majestic bird. However, you’ll need to have reached Rank 10 and unlocked flying in your Island Sanctuary to be able to land on its perch.
Approach the Griffin from behind and use the Makeshift Soporific on them to hopefully secure a catch. If successful, you’ll find the Griffin back at your pasture in your Island Sanctuary, frolicking with the rest of your domesticated friends. Make sure to keep them well-fed and happy, as the Griffin will drop Sanctuary Feather leavings for you to obtain once per day.
