Final Fantasy XIV’s latest 6.2 content patch released on August 23 and introduced one highly-anticipated feature that’s got players focused on the simpler side of life. The Island Sanctuary is a private getaway for Warriors of Light to spend time gathering, crafting, cultivating crops, and producing goods for the promise of new mounts, minions, and more. In order to help produce said goods for exportation, you’ll need to capture the various wildlife found around the island – from the common to the much less common. The intimidating Alligator is one of the more rare spawns found on the isle, and if you’re looking to grab one, continue reading to learn how to catch it in FFXIV’s Island Sanctuary.

Capturing Animals in FFXIV Island Sanctuary
You won’t be able to tackle these gators like the former legends of the past (We miss you, Steve), so you’ll need to craft a special restraint to stand a chance at taking this sucker home. After reaching Rank 8 in your Island Sanctuary, you are able to craft the Makeshift Soporific, a tool specializing in capturing Large animals like the Alligator. To craft the soporific, gather up the following materials:
- 2 Island Laver
- 1 Island Sap
- 2 Island Jellyfish
Once crafted, you can equip the Makeshift Soporific after switching to Capture mode.
Capturing the Alligator – Time, Weather, and Location
While some rare spawns are based on time and others based on weather, the Alligator is even more elusive as they’re based both on time and weather together. This means that you’ll often only have one or two chances per day to catch them in a sometimes very brief window of time. Between the hours of 6 AM to 9 AM Eorzean Time and during “Showers” weather, you can head over to the flowing rivers right outside of your sanctuary around the (X: 17, Y: 24) coordinates to spot the lurking reptile in their natural habitat. Make sure not to confuse “Showers” weather with “Rain” weather, as they are two different patterns.
Approach the Alligator from behind and use the Makeshift Soporific on them to hopefully secure your hunt. If successful, you’ll find the Alligator back at your pasture in your Island Sanctuary, hopefully playing nicely with the rest of your captured friends. You’ll want to keep them well-fed and happy, as they will drop Sanctuary Claw leavings for you once per day to collect.
