Before you get too far ahead of yourself, initiating fishing involves speaking to the Fishkeeper standing by the pond. This is just to the right of the Greenhouse at the monastery if it’s your first time partaking in the blessed activity of Fishing. You should also make sure that you have some bait on hand, but this is fairly easy to find must running around the grounds. You can also buy it from various merchants, so stock up on bait to get the most chances at fishing. It’s not rocket science.
A fish’s rarity is often indicated by the size of its shadow. One piece of bait will give you three chances to catch a fish — this means that it might be more advantageous to not take the first herring that bites. If you wait it out for a fish with a bigger shadow or a fish that’s shiny, you’re going to net a bigger catch that will be worth more if you want to pawn it off, or useful in a higher-quality recipe in Cooking Together. Keep your eyes peeled for big fish and shiny fish because these little dudes will not only be more valuable, they’ll also give you a bigger boost to your professor level.
Another good tip is to take part in Fishing Events whenever you can, whether these be sidequests from your students or the Fishing Tournament. You’ll get special bait for this, and you’ll be able to fish to your heart’s content to compete with your squad as to who can get the biggest or rarest fish. Beating each personal best set by a student will get you some kind of reward as well as a support relationship bonus, so it’s in your interest to farm the hell out of this event as soon as it’s available to you.
