Online Multiplayer Gaming will apparently be imperfect until the end of time, due to the complexity, fragility, and instability of our Internet Connections. That’s what we signed up for, and we always love to have something to blame (LAG!!!!11one) for our mishaps in the multiplayer environment. It’s only human nature, after all. Now, we do not want to actually experience problems such as rubber banding in any multiplayer game, let alone Diablo IV. Rubberbanding is the issue where you constantly get dragged back to where you were between half a second and two seconds ago, hence the name of this “feature”. Here is what you can do to improve your connection to Blizzard’s servers and fix rubber banding in Diablo 4.
How to Solve Rubberbanding Issue in Diablo IV
There are many potential causes for this “lag” you are experiencing, which is commonly referred to as rubber banding. I don’t exactly know where we should begin, so I always choose the troubleshooting which takes the least effort and time from the user and is the most common reason for the problem.
1. Check if there are issues with Diablo 4 Servers
Diablo 4 Servers are not perfect. No game has perfect servers. Issues may arise from time to time and be there for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or hours, you never know. It could be time to check if Diablo 4 Servers are down or not. After you check and verify that everything is fine, it’s time to see if you were the culprit of this problem all along…
2. Check if you have connection issues on your end
Sometimes, the issue is on your end. You ought to check if you have issues elsewhere:
- Use the Command Prompt in Windows (aka CMD) to try and ping a variety of services with the ping command (examples to follow):
ping battle.netorping blizzard.net(for US servers) should be used to ping Blizzard, and you can alsoping google.com. These should tell you if you are facing Packet Loss when you are pinging Blizzard, and we are pinging Google just as a control measure, to investigate if any issues are happening outside of our connection to Blizzard. Atracert battle.netcommand would also be a good thing to try because it tells you where your “internet packets” are traveling to get from you to the final destination. That way you can examine if there are any “roadblocks” on your way, which are out of your hands (as well as out of Blizzard’s hands). - Play a different game from a different developer (we just want you to stay clear of Blizzard servers just in case), to check if you will still have issues in that other game.
- Try SpeedTest.net and CloudFlare’s Jitter Test to check if there are some speed issues.
- See if you encounter any connection issues by doing anything else on the Internet.
3. Turn off the Crossplay feature
In some cases, turning the Crossplay Feature off in Diablo 4 on your end might result in your client connecting to a different server, thus avoiding the connection issues you had before.
4. Try tinkering with your settings in Diablo 4
In some rare cases, your Diablo 4 settings should be turned down (specifically the graphics quality) so that less strain is placed on your device.
5. Try playing Diablo 4 at a different time, outside of the peak hours
Most of the time, this issue will happen because the servers are overloaded. This is what happens with most popular games when they are new and fresh, not just with Blizzard’s games (although Blizzard has been notorious with entry queues on a lot of fresh releases) so you should try and see if the rubber banding persists outside of the peak hours (which should be between about 6 PM and midnight by my estimations).
Also, there’s always Blizzard Customer Support, you can talk to them if the issue is constant, tell them what troubleshooting you have applied so far, and they’ll be able to advise you further.
