The Shard of Agony is one of the items you need to get before summoning Duriel as an endgame boss in Diablo 4. It isn’t the most challenging task in the game, but it will take a few hundred Aberrant Cinders and some good timing in the Helltide.
Where to Get Shards of Agony in Diablo 4
To get a Shard of Agony you must defeat Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint on World Tier 4 in the Hall of the Penitent. Fighting this boss will require five Living Steel when you reach the altar in the boss room. Any time you defeat him, there is a chance that a Shard of Agony will drop. Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t drop the first time, though. More often than not, you will find one.
The first time I beat Grigoire at level 78, the only loot I got was armor. I couldn’t find any summoning drops that would help with Duriel. I had to reset the Hall of the Penitent and summon Grigoire with another five Living Steel to fight him again. In the second run of the boss fight, I found a Shard of Agony as my reward for victory.
How to Farm Shards of Agony:
- Collect five Living Steel in Helltides.
- Bring them as an offering to the Hall of the Penitent.
- Defeat Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint.
- Collect a shard from the loot.
Grigoire shouldn’t be attempted by most players before they reach level 75. He deals consistent lightning damage and has a room full of traps. Without decent gear on World Tier 4 and a good chunk of the Paragon board out of the way, he can easily wipe the floor of the halls with your under-leveled character.
To get the Living Steel itself, search for Tortured Gifts of Living Steel in Helltide events. These chests will cost 275 Aberrant Cinders each. It sounds like a lot, but the good news is that higher World Tiers can give you up to three Living Steel per chest.
How to Use Shards of Agony in Diablo 4:
Two Shards of Agony can be used to summon Duriel within the Gaping Crevasse. Along with the shards you need at least two Mucus-Slick Eggs from Varshan. These items need to be farmed continiously if you want to battle Duriel and earn some of the best Uniques in the game. He won’t be as hard as Lilith, but you should have most of your build ready before the fight. Until then, spend more time on the lower bosses Grigoire.
