Elixirs are one of the most slept-on buffs in the game, but they’re able to provide powerful resistances and even small boosts toward gaining experience. To that end, here’s how to make Elixirs in Diablo 4.
How to Make and Use Elixirs in Diablo 4
As you’ve traveled Sanctuary, you’ve likely seen an array of vaguely glowing plants. Interact with them and you’ll get a handful of herbs. These herbs are the bedrock of most elixirs, though it’s likely you’ll need your fair share of monster parts to craft some of the rarer elixirs. But how do you make them in the first place?
Here’s the succinct method:
- Go to a major town
- Locate the shop with the mortar and pestle icon (bowl)
- Speak to the alchemist and tab to the right menu
Every major town in Sanctuary has an Alchemist vendor, who is represented by the mortar and pestle icon on the map. This icon essentially looks like a small bowl with a stick in it. Approach the vendor, and you’ll see that they’re offering potion upgrades, which are based on your character level. But if you tab to Alchemist’s next menu on the right, you’ll find that he offers 24 elixirs that you can craft.
These elixirs range from “weak” resistance potions, which will only require herbs and around 1,000 gold, to more potent mixtures. My favorite elixir is undoubtedly the Assault Elixir, which gives you increased attack speed. All elixirs offer a 30-minute buff and a 5% experience boost, which makes them a great way to grind out levels or Paragon Points, especially if you intend to farm out events or dungeons.
You can also craft missing ingredients in the Refine Resources menu to the right of the Elixir menu. But these rarer ingredients do cost a lot of common crafting materials. So don’t forget to click on those ores and herbs when you see them around the world.

How to Use Elixirs in Diablo 4
But once you’ve made an elixir, there are two ways you can use it. You can just open your inventory, then tab right to Consumables to browse your crafted elixirs at your leisure, or you can add it to your action wheel.
To add a specific Elixir to your action wheel just follow these steps:
- Press ‘E’ or up on your d-pad
- Click customize or press y to modify your action wheel
- Tab right to the Consumables menu
- Select the elixir you’d like to assign to your wheel (there are three)
- Save changes
Once your elixir is added to the wheel, you’ll only need to click ‘E’ or up on your d-pad to access it again.
Even more useful than elixirs is incense. And incense happens to be tied to a Diablo 4 achievement as well. Check out how to make one here: How to Get Incense in Diablo 4.
