The entirety of 2023 will be great for all horror game enthusiasts. We already have Amnesia: The Bunker, Layers of Fear, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Alan Wake 2 is coming in Fall 2023, and here are the Outlast Trials, a prequel for the lore of Outlast 1 and Outlast 2, which serves as an explanation of how everything came to be. Without spoiling stuff from the game, let’s see if The Outlast Trials is scary or not.
How Scary is The Outlast Trials?
Well, it mostly depends on you, and how “hardened” you are when it comes to experiencing horror stuff. But, let’s compare it to the previous Outlast games. I’ll tell you, The Outlast Trials are scary. But, just slightly less scary than the previous games in my opinion. And that’s from the perspective of somebody who played it alone for a while. It is possible to adapt to the enemies that roam around the maps, finding ways to get a hold of you. It’s a much faster-paced experience and once you get a “read” on the game mechanics, the only scare you will have is during running away from the enemies.

And if you’re playing with friends, it’s definitely less scary. You’ll only be afraid for their well-being when they are being chased. When we look at it from another angle, it’s actually pretty funny at times, when you’re in a squad of four, like that cartoonish scene where one member is trying to unlock something and failing miserably, while the rest of the gang is running for their lives. The game is still in Early Access, so I believe there’s a lot of space and time for major improvements to the experience it provides for the players, so in my opinion, it is just scary enough.
