Just like in real life, literacy is a valuable skill in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Knowing how to read will allow Henry to learn new skills by deciphering books and reading alchemy recipes. This will also come in handy when you want to read any books and scrolls you may collect along your journey. Follow the steps in this guide to learn how to read in Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
How to Read in Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Learning how to read in Kingdom Come: Deliverance involves finding someone who can teach Henry. The best way to learn how to read is by starting a side quest called Mightier Than the Sword. Before you embark on this side quest, make sure to acquaint yourself with the town of Rattay first. You will also need 50 Groschen, so be sure to save some coin if you plan on learning how to read.
Mightier Than The Sword Quest
To start the Mighter Than the Sword quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, head to Rattay and speak to the town Bailiff to see if he knows anyone who can teach you to read. You will speak to the Bailiff during the Keeping the Peace main story quest as well, but if you need to find him again, he should be located near the local Armorer in Rattay.
The Bailiff tells you that there’s a Scribe in Uzhitz who can teach you to read. If you’ve been to Uzhitz before, you can just fast travel there to save time. If not, we suggest you get a horse, as Uzhitz is a long way to travel on foot from Rattay.
Find the Scribe in Uzhitz
To locate the Scribe in Uzhitz, look for the Scribe’s house across from the local Tavern in the northwest. Talk to the Scribe and ask whether he’d be willing to teach you how to read. Once you fork over 50 Groschen, you will be asked to pass a reading test.
After the cutscene, you will have to read the Golden Goose book on the left side of the table. When you’re done, speak to the Scribe again and he will ask questions about what you just read to test your comprehension. Be sure to choose the “being greedy doesn’t pay” dialogue option.
Next, you must read the book on the right side of the table in Latin. When finished, return to the Scribe. When he asks you to repeat what you read, this time you’ll want to choose the answer that’s entirely in Latin, with no English words in it.
Once you’ve passed the Scribe’s reading test, you will now know how to read in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. This will also complete the Mightier Than The Sword side quest as well. You should now be able to decipher text in books and read recipes throughout the game.
If you haven’t learned how to read yet but want to start your hand at alchemy, luckily you can still craft certain items like Savior Schnapps if you know the recipe ahead of time. For more tips and tutorials, head over to our Kingdom Come: Deliverance game hub.
