Terastalizing is a new mechanic in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet that allows Pokemon to switch their “type” up, which can make for some interesting combinations. If you’ve wandered even a little around the Paldea region, you’ve probably noticed giant, colorful crystals scattered around. These are Tera Raid Battles, which are four-on-one battles between a powered-up, Terastalized Pokemon and four Trainers, and serve as your method in catching these unique Pokemon in the wild. In addition to ordering your Pokemon to dish out their normal attacks, you can also have your trainer cheer on the team, though the purpose may be a bit unclear. It’s time for your pep talk. Here’s what cheering does in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Tera Raid Battles.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: What Does Cheering Do in Tera Raid Battles?
Tera Raids have difficulty ratings based on the number of stars they have. While one or two-star Tera Raids are pretty basic, the fights get a little more serious in four or five-star battles. Once you finish the Pokemon League and enter into end-game content, they get even worse. At that point, blindly attacking the Terastalized Pokemon won’t do – you’re gonna need to throw some tactics in there. That’s where cheering comes in.
Cheering serves as way to buff your team during the battle, and is used when you’d otherwise attack. Therefore, it’s important to know when the right time to cheer is, and when you should be attacking instead. Each trainer has access to three different cheers, and they can cheer up to three times in the fight. Try fitting a cheer between your third or fourth attack to space them out for tougher battles.
Here’s what the three different cheers provide your team in battle:
- Go All Out! – this boosts the team’s damage
- Hang Tough! – this boosts the team’s defense
- Heal Up! – this heals the team
