The main goal in Shadow of the Colossus is to take down all of the massive giants that Dormin, a great group of spirits has tasked you with defeating. You’ll have to track them all down and take them down one at a time to progress through the game and save the girl. In this article we’ll show you how to defeat the first colossus that you face in Shadow of the Colossus, which isn’t nearly as difficult as you might think.
How to Defeat the First Colossus
You’ll find the first colossus that you need to face across the field from where the game begins (south from the temple). After you speak with Dormin and are told to take out all of the colossi, hop on your horse and head across the field. You’ll need to do some climbing here, which is very easy to get used to and do.
Once you reach the top of the area, a short cutscene will play, and you’ll get your first look at the very first colossus in the game. This is just one of the many hulking creatures that you’ll need to face down and taking it down will require you to have an idea of what you’re doing.
Follow the colossus until he walks past a shaft of light on the ground. You can use the Sword here to shine the light beam on him. This will reveal its weakest points, one on the leg, and one on top of its head.
This is where the real challenge comes into play, as getting to the top of this hulking beast is not going to be easy. Once it turns around to face you, take note of its legs. You’ll want to target the left-hand leg (if you were the colossus) or the right-handed leg if you look at the monster from where you are.
Make your way over to the leg—careful to avoid being hurt by the giant’s ground-shaking steps—and take note of the locks of fur that line its leg and back. You’ll be able to use this fur-like hair to climb up the boss.
Begin your ascent, and once halfway up the monster’s calf, take note of the cracks along the skin, beneath the hair. You can use your sword to attack this spot, causing the boss to fall to its knees.
Once the colossus falls to its knees, head up the leg and make your way to the platform along the creatures back. Take a moment to regain your stamina here, and then once you’re ready, begin the climb up its back. Be aware that the entire time the creature will be trying its best to knock you off, so don’t be afraid to drop onto the platforms along the way and catch your breath.
Your main goal is to climb all the way up the back of the beast to its head, and then attack the glowing spot in its skull. Don’t forget to charge up your attacks by holding down square, and then press it again to release the powered-up attack. This will deal even more damage to the monster, allowing you to take it down easier. Try to get as many hits in as possible when on its head, and if you’re quick enough, you should be able to take it down without getting knocked back to the ground again. For more help be sure to check out our Shadow of the Colossus guide, where we’ll detail how to beat every colossus in the game, as well as offer pointers on how to fully explore the different areas that you come across.
