So you got your hands on a functioning Moon Lantern in Baldur’s Gate 3, and because of the screaming inside, you must decide whether you will free the Pixie or not. Your choice won’t ruin the game, but it can make a massive difference in the Shadowlands, and I’m here to help you choose the best path for the Pixie.
Should You Free the Pixie in BG3?
The short answer is yes; I recommend freeing the Pixie from the Moon Lantern in BG3. In my own playthrough, I valued having the freedom to walk wherever I wanted and use limitless positioning in fights over seeing shadow enemies. Either decision leaves you with a positive and a negative, which is par for the course in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What You Get for Releasing the Pixie:
If you release the Pixie from the Moon Lantern, she will grant your whole party a blessing that lets you walk around the entirety of the Shadowlands unhindered. This includes the dangerous areas around Moonrise Tower as well. However, you won’t be able to spot wraiths or shadows when they teleport around in fights.
On top of the blessing, the Pixie will help you with the printing press in Act 3. Without her help, it will be more difficult to stop any spread of propaganda around the city. It’s yet another reason to have some extra compassion for the creature in BG3.

What You Get for Keeping the Pixie in the Moon Lantern:
When you keep the Pixie imprisoned, you can spot wraiths and shadows at all times. This makes battles against them much easier. However, your entire party will need to stay within the radius of the lamp or face death from the curse. Positioning will be much harder to achieve, and at least one party member needs to carry the lamp.
How to Free the Pixie From the Moon Lantern in BG3
When you decide you want to release the Pixie, you can equip the lamp and use an active inspect skill to speak to the creature once again. This time, tell the Pixie that you have decided to let them go and choose the blessing to get through the Shadowlands as your reward.
This can be done anytime, even if you initially decided to keep the Pixie imprisoned in the Moon Lamp. Try both methods of the lamp out for yourself in Baldur’s Gate 3, and then decide on the style you prefer.
