One of the most prominent requests out of the Overwatch community is more lore to help flesh out its world. While the Archives missions of the past and backstories of each character have done this to some extent, there’s never been a much deeper look into the goings-on in the Overwatch universe. Overwatch 2’s upcoming Invasion season looks to change that with the debut of PvE missions, though to kick things off, the team is releasing a new mini-series titled Genesis that helps to set the stage for the upcoming content. For its first episode, the team has chosen to mix the beauties of progress with the omnipresent dangers looming over it.
The Technological Marvels of Omnics in Overwatch’s Universe
While most depictions of Omnics in Overwatch have been the negative side of Null Sector’s dealings, Part One: Dawn shows that things didn’t quite start that way. Omnics were mere tools for humanity, helping them to solve anything from basic needs like assisting mechanics to much larger issues like famine and world hunger. As science and technology are designed to do though, progress must be made toward their advancement. That’s why Omnica Corp, the company behind the creation of Omnics, hired Dr. Mina Liao to spearhead their research. If you aren’t aware, Dr. Liao would later become one of the founding members of Overwatch and go on to develop Echo, before dying in an attack on an Overwatch lab.
Despite the excitement behind furthering Omnic technology, many scientists were skeptical of the idea. Omnics were already seen as perfect beings, so asking Dr. Liao to improve upon perfection seemed like a near-impossible task. Yet again, as science and technology tend to go, the impossible was made possible. That day, a new generation of Omnic was created. However, it wasn’t quite as simple as the Omnic coming online. That day, it was born, and the effects of this new generation would be soon felt, something we’ll likely learn about in the next part.

Part One: Dawn may be doing a lot of setup for its upcoming episodes, but for a side project designed as backstory, this is surprisingly well fleshed out. The visuals are stunning (especially that scene toward the end), and the dialogue appears genuine as it takes on a documentary-style retrospective on the creation of Omnics and the dealings around Omnica Corp. This may just be a taste, but as a lore fan of most games (quite excessively at times), I’m excited to see where they take the upcoming episodes.
You can check out Part One: Dawn for yourself above, while Part Two and Part Three are set to debut on July 13 and July 20 respectively. For the Invasion PvE missions themselves, you can begin your journey on August 10 when Overwatch 2: Invasion releases.
